Title: Professional Development Specialist, Associate Specialist I-IV (50-100% variable)

Job Description

The Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley develops and tests effective science and mathematics instructional materials for students in preschool through grade 8, and then supports teachers, schools and other educational organizations in their use. The Hall is in search of a professional developer to support teachers nationally and internationally in the use of its combined science and literacy curriculum for elementary students (Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading). The duties of this job and the necessary qualifications are as follow:

Job Duties

  • Prepare and present professional development experiences for a wide range of education professionals in a variety of settings including in-person and via webinar;
  • Work collaboratively to develop unique presentations and workshops to support national and international awareness and implementation of the curriculum;
  • Coordinate immediate and long range professional development logistics and activities through regular meetings with Network Director;
  • Manage ongoing communication with school administrators and teachers who are implementing the programs, as well as with program partners;
  • Participate in long range planning efforts that creatively and strategically support dissemination needs and priorities;
  • Represent the program, its products, and the Lawrence Hall of Science at professional events, conferences and meetings; communicate the benefits of the program as they relate to the audience at each specific event.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, science education, literacy education or related field, or equivalent; Masters preferred
  • At least 5 years of professional experience, including elementary school teaching experience teaching and professional development experience required;
  • Excellent presentation skills;
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating research and best practices into professional development;
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines;
  • Strong working knowledge of teaching and learning;
  • Experience working collaboratively with others;
  • Skilled use of digital presentation formats, including powerpoint, webinars, video conferencing, video, etc.;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong communication materials;
  • Track record of professional behavior, such as punctuality, prompt return of email and phone calls, etc..
  • Ability to receive a valid CA Driver’s license.
  • Background check may be required.

Salary Range, Associate Specialists: $49,824–$59,976
(Depending on Qualifications and Experience)

Approximate Appointment Period: July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013. May be renewed depending on availability of funding, job performance, and program requirements.
